Want a slice of the $500M bread price-fixing settlement? The claims process is now open

Eligible Canadians can now apply for compensation from settlement with Loblaw

It might be the best thing since the alleged artificial price increase on sliced bread.

As of Thursday, the claims process is now open for Canadians seeking their share of a $500-million settlement in a class-action lawsuit related to the alleged industry-wide price fixing of bread.

Any eligible Canadian resident who purchased packaged bread for their personal use — including bagged bread, buns, rolls, bagels, naan, English muffins, wraps, pita and tortillas — between 2001 and 2021 can claim compensation from the national settlement reached with Loblaw Companies Limited, and parent company George Weston Ltd.

'I feel violated': How a Toronto retiree was falsely accused of being the Charlie Kirk shooter
77-year-old’s name and photo shared by an account impersonating a Fox news channel

A retired banker living in Toronto found himself unwillingly thrust into the centre of a political firestorm after being falsely linked to the shooting of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk on Wednesday.

Michael Mallinson, 77, had no idea what was happening until he got a panicked phone call around 6 p.m., while he was taking a nap. It was his daughter, instructing him to delete his social media because his name and photo were being spread online by an account claiming he was the suspect in the shooting.

The problem: Mallinson says he's never set foot in Utah.

A panel of Brazilian Supreme Court justices sentenced former president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison Thursday after convicting him of attempting a coup to remain in office despite his 2022 electoral defeat.

The far-right politician who governed Brazil between 2019 and 2022 was found guilty on five counts by four members of a five-justice panel. The latest to rule were Cármen Lúcia and Cristiano Zanin on Thursday, a day after another justice, Luiz Fux, disagreed and voted to acquit the ex-president of all charges

Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest in Brasilia.
